Gordon H. Williams, MD, director of the Center for Clinical Investigation and chief of the Cardiovascular Endocrinology Section, Endocrinology, Diabetes, Hypertension Division at BWH, was awarded the 2010 American Heart Association Clinical Research Prize.
Williams completed his residency and fellowship in endocrinology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He served as chief of the Endocrine, Diabetes, Hypertension Division and its forerunners at BWH for 29 years, stepping down in 2001 to head the Scholars in Clinical Science Master’s Program at Harvard Medical School and the Center for Clinical Investigation at BWH. He has been a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School since 1981.
Williams is recognized for his direction of studies creating invaluable new knowledge of the role of hormones in hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Throughout his career, Williams has focused on underlying causes of hypertension, and on support for, and education of, the patient-oriented investigator. The work done by Williams and his trainees has revolutionized the approach to both of these areas of research.
