JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine and co-director of the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology at BWH, received the 2010 American Heart Association Population Research Prize for “exceptional achievement” as the leader of clinical trials clarifying major aspects of preventive medicine and women’s health.
Manson, who has led multiple landmark studies that have enhanced medical care and public health, is recognized for making historic progress expanding knowledge of heart disease risk and prevention, especially in women.
An endocrinologist and epidemiologist, she received a doctorate in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1987 and is a lead investigator on the nation-wide Women’s Health Initiative, the cardiovascular component of the Nurses’ Health Study, the VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL (VITAL), the Women’s Antioxidant and Folic Acid Study, the KEEPS trial, and several other major studies. She is the Michael A. and Lee Bell Professor of Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School.
