Obituary
Brigham and Women’s Hospital mourns the loss of Jeff Wise, 58, an administrator in the Emergency Department since 2003. He died May 28 following a courageous battle with cancer.
“Jeff touched many lives,” said Heidi Crim, RN, nurse manager in the ED. “He lived a life full of integrity with no regrets, and we were blessed to have him on our team.”
Mr. Wise, who was born in Boston, raised in Newton and lived for the past 30 years in Sharon, began at BWH in 1995. Prior to joining the ED team, he was a staffing coordinator.
“Jeff was beloved by all the night staff,” said his former supervisor Judy Perron, RN, nurse administrator. The two worked together to coordinate a “Monday Night Live” CEU program for night nurses and, thanks to Mr. Wise’s efforts, Au Bon Pain decided to remain open all night.
Mr. Wise also spent time mentoring students through BWH’s Student Success Job Program. Two of his most recent students went on to college to study health-related professions with scholarships at MIT and BC. A third student pursued a career in respiratory therapy.
“Jeff treated the students like they were his own children. He truly dedicated himself to other people,” Jim Horan, access facilitator in the ED, said.
Mr. Wise enjoyed motorcycling with his colleagues in the Emergency Department. “Jeff always had a positive outlook,” said Andrew Fitzsimons, RN, who rode with him through the countryside in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. “When we went on rides when he was sick, you’d never see him down and out.”
Outside of BWH, Mr. Wise enjoyed golf and fishing. He was a member of Temple Israel.
Mr. Wise is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marlene; a brother Douglas of New Hampshire; a daughter Jennifer; and a son Greg, who ran this year’s Boston Marathon with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute team in honor of his father.
A memorial service was held at Temple Israel. Details will follow on a service at BWH. Remembrances may be made in Mr. Wise’s name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
