The Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center was named as one of “Boston’s Greenest” buildings by the Mayor’s Office and the American Institute of Architects.
In celebration of the AIA’s 2008 National Convention and Design Exhibition, hosted by Boston May 15 -17, the AIA and Mayor Thomas Menino partnered to select buildings in Boston that utilize environmentally friendly materials and energy efficient practices to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The Shapiro Center likely will be the first hospital facility in New England to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Silver certification.
During the three-year construction schedule, contractors recycled more than 90 percent of construction waste and used recycled building materials when possible. Low-emitting adhesives, sealants, carpets and paints are in place throughout the facility. And more than 75 percent of interior spaces throughout the building are exposed to natural light. The roof is painted white to deflect heat.
