Rehabilitation Services
Gina Smith really goes the distance for her patients. She travels more than 45 miles by car and train every morning during her two-and-a-half-hour commute from East Taunton to 850 Boylston St.
“Gina is an all around exemplary employee,” said Leigh deChaves, PT, OCS, clinical supervisor of Rehabilitation Services. “She consistently goes above and beyond for patients and is always very perceptive of their needs.”
Smith teaches patients how to apply and remove braces and soft casts for sprained and dislocated joints, assists physical and occupational therapy patients with their strengthening and stretching exercises and fills in at the front desk to schedule patient appointments. She makes it a point to follow up on patients’ requests and ensure their experiences are positive.
“Every patient’s question deserves an answer,” Smith said. “If I don’t know how to make a patient feel better, I make it my priority to find someone who does.”
Smith joined BWH in 2002 as an orthopedic technologist at BWH’s main campus. She transferred to the Ambulatory Care Center three years ago and in no time was recognized as a leader. This September, she received the Department of Rehabilitation Services’ Person of the Year Award for loyalty to staff and patients and willingness to lend a helping hand.
In a nomination letter for Smith, Colleen Gallagher, PT, DPT, senior physical therapist, wrote, “Gina goes out of her way to make sure patients are comfortable and explains anything they may have questions about. She never says she is too busy and is always ready to help.”
When she’s not racing around for her patients or colleagues, Smith enjoys watching NASCAR races with her family.
