BWH recruited new talent, appointed strong leaders and recognized outstanding employees again in 2005. “BWH is a special place because of our people, and having great people in place further empowers us to recruit talented and skilled people to join us,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb said.
Surgery rang in the new year with the announcement of three new division chiefs. Selwyn Rogers Jr., MD, MPH, was promoted to chief of the newly created Division of Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care. The department welcomed R. Morton “Chip” Bolman, MD, as chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery and Stefan Tullius, MD, PhD, as chief of the Renal Transplant Division. One recent accomplishment of Tullius—gaining Department of Public Health approval for opening a pancreatic transplant program—marks a major success for BWH.
BWH celebrated the contributions of many members of its community in the spring. Among them, Nawal Nour, MD, MPH, received in April the Dennis Thomson Leadership Award for her work creating and directing the BWH African Women’s Health Practice—the country’s only center focusing on physical and emotional needs of female circumcision victims. In May, the Volunteer of the Year Award recognized Paul Rinaldi, a 10-year volunteer in Central Transport Services, who proved an integral member of the Patient Flow Service Excellence Project. Jennifer Leaning, MD, SMH, received in June the Hippocrates Society Humanitarian Award for her efforts locally and internationally to expose human rights abuses and affect change in places like Rwanda, Darfur and Afghanistan.
Summer marked the return of a familiar face to the Department of Medicine, as Joseph Loscalzo, MD, PhD, took the leadership role as chair. Loscalzo completed his clinical training and began his career at BWH.
Nursing changes transpired in the fall, as two proven and dynamic leaders accepted the top Nursing posts at BWH and Faulkner Hospital. At BWH, Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, FAHA, the former vice president of Women’s and Specialty Services, accepted the promotion to chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, and at Faulkner, Judy Hayes, RN, MS, BWH’s Nursing director of Professional Practice Quality and Staff Development, became vice president of Nursing.
In November, BWH welcomed aboard Lisa Ponton, JD, MSW, as vice president of Human Resources.
The year closed with Jim Yong Kim, MD, MPH, returning to BWH to lead the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities. Kim had taken leave to direct the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS Department. Orthopedic Surgery welcomed Laurence D. Higgins, MD, as chief of both Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service and co-chief of the Harvard Shoulder Service. And Susan Dempsey, director of Surgical Program Development at BWH, was appointed vice president for Clinical Services at Faulkner.
"Our dynamic additions in 2005 surely will bring many successes and triumphs in 2006," Gottlieb said.
