The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded Harvard Medical School a five-year, $15.6 million grant to develop nanotechnologies that will diagnose and treat heart, lung and blood diseases. Among principal investigators from the several participating institutions are BWH's Peter Libby, MD, chief of Cardiovascular Medicine; Steven Shapiro, MD, chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; and Richard Lee, MD of Cardiovascular Medicine. The research will concentrate on applying emerging nanotechnology-technology development at the atomic, molecular or macromolecular levels-to medicine, including drug delivery to specific areas and tissue repair and regeneration, among other specific applications.
“The innovative grant bridges biomedical engineering and clinical medicine while allowing a consortium approach from leading institutions already trailblazing important discoveries in these disciplines of science,” said Libby.
