Ten years after graduating from HMS, surgeon Atul Gawande, MD, of BWH's Endocrine Surgery Unit in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery and research director at the BWH Center for Surgery and Public Health, delivered the commencement address to the HMS Class of 2005 last week. Gawande shared with these future clinicians his “five rules” for managing their careers and themselves in the challenging world of health care. Among his rules, he urged the graduates to talk to and learn from others, resist the temptation to whine and adapt to new innovations early.
