Here's the scoop: J.P. Licks has arrived in the neighborhood at One Brigham Circle. BWH extends a warm welcome to its chilly new neighbor where employees may find a delightful oasis from the summer heat and winter doldrums in the form of homemade ice cream.
The opening represents something greater than 25 flavors for the Mission Hill community though. It is evidence of the neighborhood's revitalization, a goal that the Mission Hill Neighborhood Housing Services organization has worked toward since its inception in 1975.
Those sentiments were in the air as Mayor Thomas M. Menino, City Councilor Michael Ross, State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez and representatives from neighborhood organizations attended the grand opening celebration June 14.
After polishing off a waffle cone of mint chocolate chip ice cream, Menino reminded guests that the shop is a means of improving quality of life for residents through the creation of jobs and a meeting place. J.P. Licks owner Vince Petryk staffed his newest shop with Mission Hill residents, keeping 80 cents out of each dollar earned in the neighborhood, said Menino.
The shop brings together the old and new communities, said Sanchez, noting that nearby institutions are working together with the neighborhood to “do great things.”
After the formal remarks and welcome, Petryk cut the cow-print ribbon, making the shop's opening official. Ice cream lovers streamed inside to check out the selection of ice cream and both hard and soft yogurt, in addition to coffee, espresso and breakfast bakery items.
