BWH's Alan M. Harvey, MD, MBA, was elected president of the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) this month. Harvey, director of Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, will serve a one-year term as the top officer of the statewide organization. Harvey has held several positions within MMS since joining in 1989, including speaker, House of Delegates, vice president and president elect.
“It's a great honor for BWH to have one of our medical leaders named president of the Massachusetts Medical Society. This will advance Alan's well-recognized voice on patient safety and quality care issues well beyond Francis Street and Boston,” said Andy Whittemore, MD, chief medical officer. “MMS is certainly one of the nation's leading physician and health care advocacy groups, and Alan is well-suited to take the helm of this important organization with its current agenda focused on patient safety.”
The MMS, with some 18,300 physicians and student members, is dedicated to educating and advocating for the patients and physicians of Massachusetts. The society publishes several journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine. The society is also a leader in continuing medical education for health care professionals throughout Massachusetts. Founded in 1781, MMS is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country. For more information, visit http://www.massmed.org
