The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Council unanimously approved BWH's Determination of Need (DoN) application for the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center on Tuesday.
“Brigham and Women's Hospital remains true to its mission and with this new project, we will be able to provide safer, more efficient care and strengthen our commitment to community health,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb noted in his address to the council. State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez and City Councilor Michael Ross also submitted letters of support to the council on BWH's behalf.
As part of the DoN application process, BWH has committed to investing $7.5 million over seven years to mitigate health care disparities in the surrounding Boston neighborhoods. Such programs will focus on, but won't be limited to, infant mortality and workforce development programs to facilitate skills needed to pursue careers in health care.
