About 25 teenage girls had the chance to learn about women’s health from the experts and explore careers in health care during a visit to BWH last week. The teenagers write for Teen Voices, a Boston-based magazine published for, by and about teen girls across the country. They topped off a week of learning about health with the day-long field trip to BWH, coordinated by JudyAnn Bigby, MD, BWH’s director of Community Health Programs, and by the Harvard Medical School Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. Bigby provided the girls with an overview of cervical cancer risk factors and the role of human papillomavirus (HPV). The teens listened to Elizabeth Garner, MD, discuss her work researching HPV and how the HPV vaccine affects women today. Barbara Dean and Janet Cronin of the Cytology Lab showed the teens examples of normal and abnormal Pap smears and how they are processed. The teens also visited a colposcopy exam room and learned from Roxane Gardner, MD, about the management of abnormal Pap smears.
