On Thursday, November 21, the BWH Department of Neurosurgery unveiled its newly remodeled Neurosurgery Patient Care Center. Computers customized with desktop information on brain tumors and Internet access, racks full of educational materials, magazines and videotapes, reupholstered chairs, new couches and new lighting, comprise the Center’s many enhancements, which were undertaken in an effort to improve the overall patient experience in Neurosurgery.
The Neurosurgery Patient Care Center enhancements were made possible through the generous support of the Brian Science Foundation (BSF), a nonprofit organization founded by former BWH patient Steven Haley and his wife Kathleen. The Foundation made a major gift, a portion of which was dedicated to remodeling the neurosurgical patient waiting area. The gift also supports meningioma research led by Peter Black, MD, PhD, chair of the BWH and Children’s Hospital Departments of Neurosurgery.
“I am delighted to see the wonderful improvements here in the Neurosurgery Patient Care Center,” said Haley, who attended Thursday’s unveiling with fellow BSF board memeber, Diane Coletti. “My wife and I started the Brain Science Foundation based in large part on my experience sitting right in this very room as a patient.”
“I’d like to thank Steven and the Brain Science Foundation for taking an interest in how patient care is done here in Neuro-surgery. Their generous funding rounds out our capacity to provide a comprehensive approach to patient care in this area of medicine,” said Black, who also thanked the Neuro-surgery staff and employees for their hard work and dedication to the project.
