In an effort to prepare for the new JCAHO survey process, BWH employees had the opportunity to participate in hands-on training sessions to learn more about JCAHO’s new Tracer Methodology. In February, BWH will be one of the first health care organizations in the country to be surveyed under this new process.Tracer Methodology is a patient-centered approach to evaluate how an institution meets JCAHO standards. Under this new methodology, JCAHO surveyors will now spend more than 60 percent of survey time in direct conversation with individual, frontline providers and other staff members. They will observe care, evaluate communication, assess how the hospital has integrated patient safety goals into clinical practice, and review medical records as they “trace” the patient experience through the many departments that impact care.
In an effort to prepare for the new survey process, three mock tracer sessions were conducted in Carrie Hall, where participants focused on enhancing communication between disciplines, increasing awareness of policies and procedures, and continuing to improve medical record documentation with respect to clarity and content. In addition, institutional functions such as Human Resources, Physician Credentialing and Health Information Systems were also reviewed. To help prepare for the JCAHO survey, scheduled for February 9-13, visit www.bwhpikenotes.org and look for JCAHO under “Compliance Corner.”
