As we celebrate five years of a successful partnership, below are some highlights that led to where we are today:
On Thursday, October 1, 1998, Faulkner President David Trull and former BWH President Jeff Otten marked the first official day of the affiliation between the two institutions by greeting employees of the BW/F family at each campus.
In September 2000, the BW/F Foot and Ankle Clinic, the first of many collaborative orthopedic initiatives, was established at Faulkner Hospital.
By November 2000, two years into the merger, more than 1,600 BWH surgical cases were perfomed at Faulkner Hospital. Faulkner nurses pictured are Jeanne Smith, RN (left), Patricia Mulhern (right), RN, and Darlene Oddo (back).
In early 2001, cardiologist and chief of the Harvard Vanguard’s Division of Medicine at Faulkner, Steven Lampert, MD, MBA, led HVMA’s integration into BW/F in early 2001.
In the fall of 2001, construction began on a new OR to ensure Faulkner had the resources and space to handle the increasing number of surgical cases over time. Faulkner’s Chief of Surgery Pardon Kenney, MD, continues to lead the charge of expansion. In March of 2002, Norman Sadowsky, MD, chair of Faulkner Radiology and Steven Seltzer, MD chair of BWH Radiology, provided a shining example of the cooperative nature of BW/F with the creation of the Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Department of Radiology.
A new MRT and CT suite is constructed at Faulkner in March of 2002.
In spring of 2002, medical residents Jay Bradner, MD, Mark Pomerantz, MD, Eli Gelfand, MD, and Nora Osman, MD, experienced the benefits of the polished training program at Faulkner. Residents enjoy their rotation at Faulkner, as it provides a more varied case mix and a pace that allows more time for patient interactions and education.
During the fall of 2002, the BW/F Transfusion Unit opens at Faulkner. (left to right) Donna Murtagh, RN; Gerri Remch, RN; Sue Keohane, RN; and Monique Kadesh, RN, work to provide the highest quality of care to outpatients, like James Fagan (center) of Hyde Park, who sought care in the calm and private atmosphere of the new Unit.
During the early months of 2003, BWH President Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, announced the new BW/F vision to crowds at both campuses. The vision focuses on the institutions’ mutual priorities of patient care, research, education and people.
