Due to a variety of commuting options available to its employees, BWH is one of 83 area employers named as a 2003 Best Workplace for Commuters—a list that was compiled by the New England Best Workplaces Coalition. The options offered to BWH employees include a 50 percent T-pass subsidy and carpool and vanpool assistance for hospital employees. While all of these are beneficial to commuters, Bulletin found vanpooling to be a preferred option among long-distance commuters.
“BWH is a good place to commute because it is accessible by several means of public transportation,” said Marilyn Slocum (pictured), Blood Donor Center, who has been commuting to BWH via vanpool for seven years. “Being part of the vanpool is a great way to save money on commuting expenses and to get to know some really nice people,” she added.
BWH employee and south shore resident Diane Hanlon (pictured), Hospital Administration, has been a part of the “Caravan for Commuters” vanpool since 1992. “If it weren’t for the vanpool, I would not be commuting to Boston today,” said Hanlon. “The long commute every day is much less stressful, not-to-mention less expensive.”“I know at the end of the day I can close my eyes and feel safe falling asleep because I am not on the train,” said vanpooler Deborah Lehto (pictured), Center for Clinical Investigation. “Also, the best reason for taking the van is the absence of stress due to an easy commute. Because of this, I am a happier person when I greet my family at the end of my workday.”According to Robert Chicarello, assistant director, Security and Parking, the monthly charge for vanpooling is approximately $100; however, BWH reimburses 35 percent of the cost.
