Being responsible for the blood supply at a medical center as large as BWH can be a daunting task; however, it is one that Linda Perry welcomes happily.
Perry, lead blood donor recruiter in BWH’s Blood Donor Center, is this month’s Service Hero. Perry, who has worked at BWH since 1997, was nominated by Judy Wallace, chief administrator, Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine, who explains that “Linda is an extremely enthusiastic recruiter who is highly involved with her mission and goals to recruit donors.”
Perry is a jack of all trades in the Blood Donor Center. On any given day, she can handle the Center’s presentation at new employee orientation, cover one of nearly 70 annual off-site mobile blood drives, execute emergency recruitment for a particular blood type based on urgent patient cases, oversee and assist with on-site donations or proactively plan seasonal and holiday promotions to attract donors to the Center.
Perry is always open to helping in whatever way she can even if it entails a task that is not in her job description. “Linda has even been known to drive the van to mobile blood drives or to help move equipment to off-site locations,” said Christine Burgio, nurse program manager, Blood Donor Center and Perry’s supervisor.
“I love my job,” said Perry with a smile. “The challenges and rewards are countless for me. The fact that I am able to help people in a special way is what keeps me satisfied in my job,” added Perry, who has just the right energy and personality to match her unique role at BWH.
Perry, a regular donor herself, admits that she is always on the look out for prospective blood donors when she is out and about in different areas of the hospital.
“Recruiters have to have the ability to establish an instant rapport with donors and maintain a pleasantness during ongoing interactions with them. The Center is fortunate to have Linda on our team, especially since these special talents come so easily to her,” said Burgio.
Those interested in blood donation should call ext. 2-6620 or stop by the BWH’s Blood Donor Center along the Main Pike.
