Linda Jo Stern will be leaving her position as executive director of the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center to head BWH’s international training, education and service program PROMESA. PROMESA is an extension of the BWH Medical Mission to Honduras, which annually sends 5-6 groups of physicians, nurses, midwives and dentists to provide primary health care in the poverty-stricken areas of Honduras. PROMESA will provide a coordinated approach to international service work among all disciplines at BWH. The program also will develop a collaborative relationship with other Partners entities, and will act as a service component that benefits the patients and families of BWH and of developing countries. Some of PROMESA’s goals will include resident training, health services (such as the primary care brigades, sabbatical programs, family planning and dental work), local health care provider training (including lay midwives, community health workers, teachers and youth) and a rural health/development project. Stern will provide leadership, direction, oversight, planning and fund-raising for this innovative program. “Our overall goal is to make an impact on the health status of the people in this region, and that’s very complicated in a very poor area,” says Stern. “The people in Honduras make between one to three dollars per day for families of five to eight people. Few have water or good sanitation facilities, which contributes to their poor health. Many of the children suffer from chronic malnutrition. However, this program will provide services and benefits, while giving our doctors an opportunity to learn, teach and to do service work.” To learn more about PROMESA,
