A champion for minority women’s health
Addressing the medical needs of disadvantaged and vulnerable populations has always been top priority for JudyAnn Bigby, MD. At BWH, where she is both a primary care physician and the medical director of Community Health Programs, her special focus is improving care for low-income and minority women. For her outstanding contributions to this realm of women’s health, Bigby has earned the hospital’s 2000 Mary Horrigan Connors Award. She accepted the honor at a January 18 meeting of the BWH Women’s Health Leadership Forum, which was hosted at Harvard Medical School by the school’s dean, Joseph Martin, MD. “Dr. Bigby has been a leader in promoting the health of minority women nationally, and particularly in the urban core of Boston. She has played a major role in increasing the exposure of HMS students and faculty to the health concerns of these women,” said BWH President Jeffrey Otten, who presented the award along with WHLF member Susanne Connors Joyce. Established last year, the award confers a $25,000 grant for women’s health research, teaching, clinical or community projects. Funding is drawn partly from a pool of $5 million given to BWH by the family of John “Jack” Connors, Jr., former BWH trustee and chairman of Partners HealthCare System. This support is matched each year by WHLF members. Bigby accepted her award “in honor of the many women who struggle every day to be able to focus on their own health, and that of their families,” she said. “I am inspired by their strength and perseverance.”
