Thomson Leadership Award 2001
he commitment and coaching that Nancy Hickey, MS, RN, director of Personnel Resource Applications, has given to her staff nurses and patients has won her much well-deserved respect and admiration. This year, it has also won her the Dennis J. Thomson Leadership Award 2001. “It is such a privilege to know and work with such a talented staff, ” said Hickey, who was chosen out of more than 30 applicants for the award. “This recognition reflects the dedication and talents of my staff and colleagues, whom I admire greatly. This is not so much an award as it is an obligation to maintain Dennis Thomson’s legacy of spirituality towards our work.” The Dennis Thomson Leadership Award was created last year to reinforce the characteristics of leadership embraced by the late Dennis Thomson, former vice president of Public Affairs at BWH. The award recognizes an outstanding leader at BWH on an annual basis. Nominations reflecting an individual’s key qualities of leadership such as character, competency, composure, commitment, courage and care for people were submitted this fall and reviewed by a steering committee. Last year, Maria Damiano, administrator, CDIC, became the first recipient of the award. “Those of us who had the privilege to work with Dennis understood his focus and kindness,” said chief operating officer Matt Van Vranken at the January 18 Administrative Leaders Group meeting, at which the award was presented to Hickey. “He truly transformed the people he worked with at this place. It is our hope that this award will allow us to keep focused on the important attributes that comprise a great leader.” According to Paula Autori, RN, staff nurse and Hickey’s award nominator, Hickey embodies the spirit of the Thomson Leadership Award every day. “I have been a staff nurse working with and for Nancy Hickey for three years. During this time, I have never spent a minute worrying about her confidence and support, because it is always apparent. Nancy talks to us as people, not just employees. I feel very special to be working for her.” “Nancy Hickey has been described as someone who believes in her staff and offers words of encouragement and praise to help people realize their potential and self-worth,” said Van Vranken. “She consistently demonstrates compassion and maintains a deep commitment to quality patient care. Above all else, she demonstrates respect for patients and employees alike.” In addition to receiving a personalized plaque, Hickey’s name will be placed as the 2001 recipient on a plaque in the Bornstein Family Amphitheater.
