On the heels of the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center’s opening, BWH is moving forward with plans to upgrade the infrastructure of the Tower, privatize many patient rooms and regionalize pods and floors.
“Over the next 10 months, we will concentrate on meeting those three goals for the Tower,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services.
In January, Tower 12C opened as a new, 10-bed pod for Oncology patients previously admitted to available beds on medical or surgical pods. Regionalizing Oncology patients on Tower 12C helps ensure these patients receive specialized care.
These 10 beds will relocate to Tower 4B in October after the completion of construction necessary to create a protected air environment for BMT patients.
When upgrades are complete in January 2010, Oncology will be located primarily on Tower 4, 5, 6 and 7AB and 12C. All oncology beds will be private.
In June, Tower 4B, Urology and Plastic Surgery, will move to Tower 12A, and Tower 7ABCD, General Surgery and the Trauma and Burn ICU, will move up to 8ABCD, which is vacant.
