Janet Barnes, RN, JD has joined BWH as the Risk Manager. In her new role, Barnes will oversee the risk management program primarily including assessing incidents and adverse outcomes and acting as a resource for professional staff and hospital employees for all matters related to medical malpractice or general liability. Barnes will also work closely with the Patient and Family Relations Department in responding to patient concerns. In addition, she will have a major role in the peer review process, root cause analyses and regulatory reporting.
Barnes previously served as a Risk Manager at New England Medical Center, and has been an associate and senior associate with the medical malpractice defense firms McCarthy, Bouley & Barry and with Sloane and Walsh, both in Boston. Barnes is a registered nurse, having practiced at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in pediatrics, neonatal intensive care and adult surgical units. She received her diploma in Nursing from MGH, a BSN from St. Anselm College and her Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School.
Barnes is available to provide risk management education at staff meetings or Grand Rounds. She is located in PBB-Mid Campus, 3rd floor, and can be reached at ext. 8394.
Manson Honored by Popular Magazine
JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine at BWH and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, was named one of the top 10 “Champions of Women’s Health” in the United States by Ladies’ Home Journal. The award honors her work in women’s health and preventive medicine, especially the prevention of heart disease and diabetes, as well as her leadership role in the Women’s Health Initiative and other major women’s health studies.
Bieber Named to DNA Bank Post
BWH pathologist Frederick R. Bieber, PhD, has been named to the Advisory Committee for the national DNA Data Bank, which began operations on June 30, 2000. Bieber, chosen for his expertise in the use of DNA information, joins eight other specialists in policing, science, genetics, medicine and law from the United States and Canada on this committee. Bieber and the others have been appointed to a five-year term and are eligible for reappointment at the conclusion of their term. Bieber’s qualifications include being a member of the FBI’s DNA Advisory Board at the US Department of Justice, a licensed and certified member of a number of American genetics and genetics-related boards, a recipient of numerous academic and public service awards and honors, the author of more than one hundred publications and a testifying expert in many DNA cases throughout the country.
