The ASCEND Program—A Supportive Curriculum in Education and Development—will be accepting applications until July 14 for next year’s team. ASCEND, which began in 1998, is a team-based program that guides participants through networking and project-related activities that benefit BWH. Employees from diverse backgrounds are brought together to develop their leadership talents within a performance-oriented environment. “It’s really a fun way for employees to build up their leadership skills,” says ASCEND guide Dorothy Goulart, MS, RN, Quality Management Services. In ASCEND, six employees participate on a team led by two guides over a period of nine months. In the past, the program’s projects have had a positive impact on customer service in Outpatient Pharmacy, Outpatient Radiology, and Ambulatory Services. Last year’s team in particular worked towards designing an employee suggestion program, and recommend how it should be implemented. ASCEND guide Thomas Johnson, Finance and Accounting, is optimistic about the program’s impact. “When an employee who works in an area can come up with innovative ideas—either for that area, or for an area they’re indirectly involved in—there is a positive outcome. We expect that managers will take the time to listen to what the employees have to say, take it and turn it into a better way of doing business here at BWH.” All applicants for this year’s ASCEND program must have at least one year of BWH employment to be eligible. Two sponsors—the applicant’s supervisor, and someone with knowledge of the applicant’s work performance—must endorse the applicant by completing a recommendation form.
