Behind the temporary wall that now greets visitors at the 75 Francis Street entrance is the construction of the new Robert and Ronnie Bretholtz Center for Patients and Families. The center—which honors the memory of the late chairman of the Board of Trustees, Robert Bretholtz, and his commitment to service to patients and families—will contain private areas with a full-time staff to provide education and support for patients and families in a comfortable atmosphere. The project is scheduled to be completed in November, and several services have had to be moved or reconfigured to accommodate the construction. New signs are posted in strategic areas to direct people around the construction, and existing signs have been revised to reflect the changes. In particular, the main entrance to Admitting will be unavailable during the construction, and patients must use an alternate entrance located near the Tower elevators on the ground floor. The hallway between the main lobby and the cashier’s office is now closed and will not reopen until the construction is complete. The public telephones and ATMs previously located along that hallway are now located under the staircase to the Pike level, where they will remain permanently. Newspapers have also been moved to that location, and the cashier’s office is now accessible only via the corridor from the Tower elevators. In addition, the Chapel has been relocated to an area next to the Medical Staff Reception office on L1 of the Ambulatory Services Building. The Patient/Family Liaison office has been relocated to the Emergency Department Administrative area, and 80 lockers for physicians have been rebuilt on Tower 4, where they will remain permanently. “We worked with each affected department individually to plan for the construction,” said Chuck Labins, project manager, Partners Real Estate and Facilities. “We found some creative solutions to the space problems the construction posed—using the space under the steps to the Pike for phones and ATMs, for example—and as the project proceeds, we will continue to act on the feedback we get in order to make the process go as smoothly as possible.” For more information or to make suggestions, e-mail Chuck Labins at clabins@partners.org.
