BWH mourns the loss of Ann Higgins, RN, Thoracic Surgery Unit RN care coordinator, who passed away unexpectedly Nov. 19. She was 61.
Ms. Higgins, of Quincy, worked at BWH for more than 30 years, beginning her nursing career at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital as a staff nurse and later becoming a Thoracic Surgery staff nurse before her most recent role.
“Ann was a leader, especially on the Thoracic Unit,” said Christine Dutkiewicz, MSN, RN, CCM, nursing director for Care Coordination, who worked with Ms. Higgins for many years. “She was a member of the 2004 team that developed the model for the Thoracic interdisciplinary daily rounds and was a driving force in fostering this collaborative care.”
Added Carol Corbett, MS, RN, Thoracic clinical nurse educator and longtime friend and colleague: “Ann brought both passion and humor to her role as RN care coordinator. She was certainly unforgettable.”
Ms. Higgins’ niece Corey Sylvester, a physician recruiter for primary care, says she was inspired by her aunt to join BWH. “The Brigham was such a huge part of her life,” she said. “The patients she cared for and staff she worked with made her incredibly proud to work for BWH. She saw it as a privilege.”
Ms. Higgins wrote and published two children’s books, “I Can Choose” (pictured above) and “Baxter the Bully.”
She is survived by her sister Karen Watson and brother-in-law Joseph; sister Susan Sylvester and brother-in-law Steven; brother Michael and sister-in-law Judy; brother Robert, Jr., and sister-in-law Michelle; sister-in-law Sandra Higgins; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.
Those wishing to do so may make a donation in her honor to the Thornton & Naumes House, 48 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115.
