For graduating Harvard Medical School student Yian Xiao, medicine is about more than just treating patients.
“It’s about improving care delivery and patient outcomes,” she said. “That’s one of the many reasons I wanted to come to the Brigham. Everyone here strives for excellence in research and patient safety.”
Xiao is one of the 75 medical students from across the country who matched with BWH’s Internal Medicine Residency Program last week. Over the next few years, this cohort will make its way across the hospital campus, learning from senior residents, faculty and staff, and providing compassionate care to patients.
“This is an exciting time for all of us,” said Joel Katz, MD, residency director of Internal Medicine, during the annual Match Day gathering for newly matched students on March 15. “We’re welcoming a new group of diverse, dedicated and talented interns who are eager to learn, and we are equally eager to welcome into the Brigham family.”
BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD, also welcomed the students aboard.
“Our Brigham community will benefit tremendously from the many talents these new residents bring,” said Nabel, who reminisced about her own Match Day in 1981, when she learned she would be a resident at BWH. “Their interests and talents will enrich our hospital and benefit our patients.”
The Match Day gathering drew senior residents, seasoned physicians and other members of the BWH community, who congratulated and welcomed the students.
“There is a culture of mentorship here that you don’t find everywhere,” said newly-matched student David Nemer.
