After a trip to London to visit a palliative care unit, the oncology and palliative care team on Tower 5AB began holding afternoon tea once a week for patients, families and staff.
An example of teamwork, collaboration and high-quality patient- and family-centered care, this thoughtful, simple gesture comforts some of BWH's most vulnerable patients and families during a difficult time in their lives.
The oncology and palliative care team was among teams and individuals honored with 2012 Partners in Excellence Awards during a Dec. 12 ceremony. This year, awards were presented to a total of 109 individuals from BWH, Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center and the BWPO, as well as 968 members of 61 project teams, who go above and beyond every day. A number of teams were recognized for their contributions to BWH's strategic commitments of patient affordability and care redesign, including care redesign for stroke, AMI and diabetes; clinical documentation improvement; SCAMPS; and the continuum of care committee.
"Believe me when I tell you, your efforts truly make a difference," said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. "It is clear from the nominations we received that you shine in the areas of teamwork, leadership and innovation, delivery of quality care and service, operational efficiency and community contributions. Your contributions are vital in enabling us to deliver on our mission of patient care, research, teaching and community outreach."
One of last year's award recipients, Mayra Scott, presented the keynote address, which focused on the "Brigham Way" and Scott's four-step motto for life: Credibility, Accountability, Responsibility and Reliability. Scott, who recently earned her bachelor's degree, began her time with BWH in 1977 in Dietary and now works in the mailroom.
"My goal is to use my degree and my life experiences to the fullest," Scott said. "It is such an honor to be a part of the Brigham family because everyone's work does make a difference. The Brigham is a place where you can continue to grow and learn-just as I am doing. Keep striving in the spirit of the ‘Brigham Way.'"
