Earlier this fall, the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (CFDD) announced the appointment of Robert Fuhlbrigge, MD, PhD, as faculty director for the Office for Research Careers (ORC).
An associate professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics and Vice Chair for Research in BWH's Department of Dermatology, Fuhlbrigge has a long-standing interest in mentorship and research career development. He has worked closely with the ORC since its inception in 2006 and has served on the office's Research Advisory Committee for four years.
Fuhlbrigge had the opportunity to address BWH postdocs during last month's National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which also included career development and social events at BWH. He spoke about the importance of finding a strong mentor and shared tips for becoming an effective mentee. Fuhlbrigge urged postdocs to be proactive in seeking out mentors, pointed them to ORC resources and encouraged them to reflect on their expectations for mentor-mentee relationships.
"Mentorship is a dynamic, reciprocal relationship aimed at the development of both mentor and mentee," he told attendees.
Fuhlbrigge earned his medical and doctorate degrees at Washington University.
