Michael Murphy, MD, has joined BWH as director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Murphy was recruited to the BWH Department of Emergency Medicine from South Shore Hospital, where he served as medical director for the hospital-based EMS system and several fire-based EMS providers.
An innovative EMS expert and collaborative leader, Murphy will facilitate the relationship between the hospital and outside EMS companies in his new role, as well as oversee training for third-party paramedics and other first responders who provide care to patients before they arrive at the Emergency Department.
A board certified emergency medicine physician, Murphy will practice clinically in the Emergency Departments of both BWH and Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital. Murphy is a member of the executive committee of the Regional EMS Council and the chair of the Regional Trauma Committee. He received his bachelor's degree from Clark University and medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, and trained in emergency medicine at Boston Medical Center.
Murphy said he is thrilled to be joining BWH as he can trace his roots all the way back to the Lying-In Hospital (one of BWH's predecessor hospitals), where he was born.
"Mike has earned a tremendous level of respect from the EMS community, and his leadership will be a critical asset in expanding emergency and trauma care programs," said Ron Walls, MD, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
