BWH and Faulkner Hospital were both recognized as “Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) 2012 report. The annual survey is conducted by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) organization. Both hospitals earned top marks for their commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face challenges in accessing adequate health care.
“We are honored to take part in the HEI each year,” said Tina Gelsomino, MSW, LCSW, administrative director of the Office for Women’s Careers in the BWH Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, and co-chair of the BW/F LGBT Friends Employee Resource Group. “We are proud of the people who work every day to create and sustain a safe, supportive and affirming environment for all members of the LGBT community.”
BWH and Faulkner were among a select group of 234 health care facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in Healthcare Equity. Facilities awarded this title meet several key indicators for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for staff.
