It takes a few minutes for Gloria Castro to calculate the number of years of service her family has contributed to the Brigham, but when she does the math, she is always in awe of the role BWH has played in the life of her family.
"Last time I checked, we have 18 family members working at the Brigham," said Castro, operations supervisor in the NICU, who has worked at BWH for 35 years. "I believe, combined, we have more than 150 years of service."
Last week, Castro celebrated her 35th year of service at the 32nd Annual Employee Service Awards ceremony in the Cabot Atrium. She was joined by her sister Sandra Castro, who celebrated 30 years, as well as nearly 1,600 other BWHers marking five to 45 years of service.
"In total, we are celebrating 21,165 years of service when we add up all of your years," said Vice President of Human Resources Julie Celano, MS, MEd, who welcomed honorees and guests to the event.
"We simply would not be the world-class academic medical center that we are without the contributions each of you makes every day," said BW/F President Betsy Nabel, MD. "Your dedication and extraordinary talents make the Brigham the best place to work, visit and receive care."
Other hospital leaders kicked off the awards presentations by taking the audience on a trip down memory lane and recounting milestones and events that occurred at each five-year interval. The upbeat presentation by eight vice presidents had the audience dancing and shaking noisemakers in their seats, especially when Vice President of Surgical Services and Imaging Sanjay Pathak, MBA, MPH, donned sunglasses and danced to Kanye West's "Stronger," a hit song when five-year employees began at BWH in 2007. David McCready, MBA, MHA, vice president of Clinical Services and vice chair of Administration and Finance, also got into the swing of things when "Staying Alive" was played as a throw-back to 1977, when the 35-year employees joined BWH.
Everyone rose to their feet when the two 45-year honorees, Arlene Cronin and Cheryl McDonald-Spriggs, walked the red carpet as the culmination of the event. Cronin, a medical technologist in the Hematology Lab, and McDonald-Spriggs, executive assistant to the executive director of Radiology, knew each other years ago when they used to play in the BWH bowling league.
