Facts about Our Founding Hospitals:
Founded in 1832, The Boston Lying-In Hospital was one of the nation’s first maternity hospitals. Prior to that time, home birthing was the norm. The Lying-In merged with the Free Hospital for Women in 1966 to form the Boston Hospital for Women, which became part of BWH in 1980.
The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital was founded in 1913, making next year its centennial. In his will, Mr. Brigham stipulated that the bulk of his estate would fund a hospital to provide care to the sick who found themselves to be in “indigent circumstances.”
The Robert Breck Brigham Hospital was founded in 1914 (making 2014 its centennial) with funds from the estate of Peter’s nephew Robert.
