BWHers took to the streets of Dorchester Sunday, May 13, with hundreds of other community members for the 16th Annual Mother’s Day Walk For Peace.
The 3.6-mile walk, which began at Town Field Park, was organized by the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute as a way for families who have lost their children to violence to promote peace in the community. This year, the BWH Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care team partnered with the BWH Center for Community Health and Health Equity to raise funds and awareness of violence as a public health issue.
Joining hands with Ms. Tina Chery, head of the institute, were Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Police Commissioner Edward Davis, BWH staff and hundreds of others taking a stand against violence in the community. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chery reminded the crowd that “it is not acceptable for someone to take another mother’s child.”
The Brigham team committed to raise $500 for the walk but finished its fundraising efforts with an incredible $2,000 for the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, which strives to create an environment of peace and unity.
