Employees, patients and visitors who use the 15 Francis St. entrance to BWH are getting ready for a change in their routine. On April 1, the entrance will close to pedestrians and vehicles for approximately two years while the Brigham Patient Parking Garage is built underneath the 15 Francis St. entry driveway and ramp.
During this time, employees will be able to enter and exit the building through a temporary entrance that will be built off Huntington Avenue. The new doorway will lead employees through the back of Carrie Hall and onto the Nesson Pike. This entry will be for employees only. Patients and visitors should use the 45 or 75 Francis St. entrances.
Constructing the underground garage will involve digging down 40 feet and removing about 40,000 cubic yards of soil and 15,000 cubic yards of rock. This mass excavation project is scheduled to last until the spring of 2013. Workers will then spend another year building the garage. When it opens in 2014, the garage will be completely hidden underground, and topped with a landscaped green space.
“Efforts have been made to minimize the impact of construction as much as possible,” said Arthur Mombourquette, vice president of Support Services and interim vice president of Human Resources, during an informational meeting for employees on Feb. 21.
The windows of offices that face the construction site will be fitted with acoustic noise barriers, and filters will be added to air intake vents to keep dust out of the building. An aggressive rodent control program has already begun.
Infectious Diseases nurse Joanne Delaney, RN, attended one of three employee informational sessions in February to learn about air quality and noise impacts. She was surprised to learn about the complexity of the project, noting, “It will look nice and enhance the neighborhood when it is all done.”
