BWH strives to provide the healthiest environment possible for employees, patients and visitors. On Nov. 17, this year’s date for the Great American Smoke-out, BWH will kick off an initiative to become an entirely tobacco-free campus and promote health and wellness.
“Many of our patients are extremely vulnerable when they come to us, and we need to do everything we can to protect them,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. “I am thrilled to begin this important work in making our hospital campus completely tobacco-free.”
BWH is one of 10 hospitals throughout the city becoming tobacco-free in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission. Faulkner Hospital became tobacco-free last year.
BWH will complete this work in phases over the course of several months. Employees, patients and visitors will begin to see signage prohibiting smoking throughout the entire main and distributed campus later this month. A program will be developed to support employees who would like to quit smoking.
“We also will refine our program for inpatients who are smokers so that we can provide them with alternative products during their hospitalization and encourage them to quit as well,” said Janet Razulis, administrative director of Clinical and Operational Projects, who is leading the workgroup to implement this effort.
Employees will receive more information in the coming weeks.
