As mentioned in March 17 Bulletin, JCAHO’s new ruling allows unannounced surveys to be performed at almost anytime during the three-year accreditation cycle. With this increased window of opportunity it is especially important to not only prepare for the January 2001 survey, but to keep in mind the importance of being continually ready. That’s why, on a quarterly basis, the PREPAIRE Team performs audits to assess the performance of BWH’s systems and to identify problem areas to be remedied. The 1999 fourth quarter PREPAIRE results showed room for improvement in staff knowledge or practices in the following areas: • The various Emergency Response Codes to obtain assistance in an emergency; • Identification of which outlets are connected to the Emergency Power System; • Completion of daily temperature logs on refrigerator; • Security of syringes; • Dating opened medication vials; (Cont. on p. 4) Are you prepared for JCAHO? (Cont. from p.1) • Maintaining boundaries for ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ areas; and • Storing only appropriate items on the floor. Complete answers and explanations for these and other important PREPAIRE topics will appear in future “Ask Yourself” columns. The PREPAIRE Team will continue conducting the quarterly audits in all areas of the hospital throughout the year. For more information regarding the PREPAIRE Team Audits and/or the JCAHO survey, please contact one of the JCAHO Prep Team (The PREPAIRE Team) members: Karen Nelson, Cathy Breen, Pat Reid-Ponte, Diane Hanley, Dee Dee Mariano, Susan Ravagni, Tonya Miltier, Richard Giardina, Janice Rogers, and Rebecca Silver.
