Rhonda Martin, MPH, BSN, RN, of the BWH Intensive Care Unit Float Pool, was in the Dominican Republic on a volunteer mission with the Intercultural Nursing Society at the time of the earthquake Jan. 12. This is an excerpt from an e-mail she sent her colleagues Jan. 21 from the Dominican Republic/Haiti border.
We continue here with relentlessly long 12 hour days.Since I am on the border, all the local hospitals are filled with Haitians…we are seeing close to 300 patients a day as the Dominicans are now using us as a clinic. We are normally splitting into two groups and seeing 100 patients each group…Yesterday, my group leader took me on some home visits to see folks who are bed-ridden & can’t get to a clinic. Quite eye-opening. Yesterday, my group drove 3 hours on a near non-existent road to a remote mountain village that doesn’t get healthcare. Along this very remote area we saw Haitians walking in lines with sacks on their heads on the rural mountain trails. They are just now coming over in droves. Our team is going to donate all our supplies to Haitian relief efforts…
