Bohan, the executive vice chair of Emergency Medicine, next month will be honored for his dedicated service, kindness and leadership with the Thomson Compassionate Long-Term Achievement Award.
Since joining the BWH Emergency Department in 1993, J. Stephen Bohan, MD, MSc, has served as a trusted mentor invested in developing the talent of new physicians and physician assistants, an exemplary leader guiding the department through change, a compassionate care provider and, above all, someone who will listen.
“Steve has an amazing capacity for people, for really listening to their problems and helping them,” said Ron Walls, MD, chair of Emergency Medicine. “It doesn’t matter the slightest bit whether these people are patients, colleagues, staff, residents or chance encounters. He has this inexhaustible energy for giving that is at once moving and inspiring.” Bohan, the executive vice chair of Emergency Medicine, next month will be honored for his dedicated service, kindness and leadership with the Thomson Compassionate Long-Term Achievement Award.
Prior to joining BWH, Bohan honed his leadership skills as executive officer of the Naval Hospital in Newport. During his 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy, he was honored with two National Defense Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals and the Distinguished Service Medal.
In his 16 years at BWH, Bohan has helped launch the ED Observation Unit, redesign the layout of the ED and roll out the Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant program. Despite the department’s hectic pace, Bohan consistently extends a helping hand or kind smile to everyone who walks through its doors.
“When patients walk through the door, they are here because they need our help,” Bohan said. “Regardless of how they got here or what they are here for, we should offer our hand to try to help.”
Bohan’s compassionate leadership has touched countless colleagues, including physicians, physician assistants, nurses and administrative staff.
“I worked with Dr. Bohan for five years, and he taught me how to manage a unit with respect and dignity for each person who works there,” said Judy Perron, RN, a nurse administrator who previously was a nurse manager in the ED. “He was a role model for how to get people involved in their work and make the unit a community and a place you want be each day.”
Joe Camillus credited Bohan with helping him transition to the role of administrative director of Emergency Medicine. “Simply put, I could not do this job without his mentorship and willingness to tutor me on all aspects of Emergency Medicine,” said Camillus, who joined the department last year. “There was no need for him to do this, other than his personal interest in my development. He is a treasure in a white jacket.”
He added, “There is little doubt that Steve’s mentoring has created a new generation of leaders at the hospital, people who will carry on the tradition of service to our patients and to each other in a manner best described as the ‘Brigham Way.’”
Beyond the ED, Bohan participates on many hospital committees, including the Drug Safety Subcommittee, the Medical ?Staff Executive Committee, the Admin-istration and Finance Committee, the ICU Leadership Committee, the Care Improvement Council and the Quality Assurance/Risk Management Committee, which he has chaired since 2006.
“Dr. Bohan has done a superb job leading the Quality Assurance/Risk Management Committee,” said Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD. “The task requires the utmost attention to detail and a fair, open-minded approach. Dr. Bohan is a master of both.”
Bohan said that all members of the ED team work together as an organic piece, completely interdependent and each indispensable with the common goal of doing what is best for the patient.
“I couldn’t do this without all the members of the ED staff, from the registrars, business specialist, my nursing colleagues including the care facilitators and the ever reliable and former U.S. Marine, Mr. David Buffalo (materials coordinator in the ED),” he said.
Save the date: Attend the Thomson Compassionate Care Award Ceremony June 3, at 4 p.m., in the Bornstein Amphitheater.
