Obituary:
Heckle Russell, the hard-working weekend supervisor in the BWH Call Center known as a dedicated leader who looked out for her staff, died May 10, following a battle with cancer. She was 65.
Ms. Russell was originally from Jamaica, where she was educated at the Shortwood School and Durham College. She came to Boston in the 1980s and began working at the BWH Call Center in 1990 where she worked until February of this year. Her colleagues recalled her as a hard worker; her job at BWH was one of three jobs she worked. She also worked full-time at Blue Cross-Blue Shield for 23 years and part-time in a Dorchester fabric store.
“She was a tireless worker, faithfully working every Saturday, Sunday and holiday, and she did more for others than herself,” said Sam Dottin, team leader for Operator Services. “I always told her to slow down, but she worked hard to take care of her family.”
Ms. Russell’s family was with her when she passed away on Mother’s Day, and her Call Center colleagues were close by, too, because she was a patient on Tower 6B. “Our staff came together in the last few months to support Heckle as we knew her last days were here,” Dottin said. Ms. Russell, who lived in Dorchester, was survived by two children, Marilyn G. and George R. Russell, both of Florida; one sister, Marlene Dennis of Boston; one brother, Lando Pollack of Jamaica; and seven grandchildren.
Her services were held last week from the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home in Milton.
