Tayla Fitzpatrick, 10, right, gets a taste of working at the lab along side her mother, Tabitha Brown, senior lab control technologist, during last week’s Take Our Children to Work Day.
Finding out what goes on before and after each surgical case was the focus of Kofi Yankey, 11, when he attended last week’s Take Our Children to Work Day with his mother, Beatrice Firempong, a senior medical technologist.
“I think it’s really cool to see what happens behind closed doors,” said the fifth grader, who toured one of the divisions of the Biomedical Engineering department responsible for sterilizing surgical instruments. “I never thought it was so much work.”
Nearly 100 children participated in the event, attending a kick-off breakfast with welcoming remarks from Beverley Sobers, director of Workforce Development, and Carlen Singmaster, special events coordinator.
“We look forward to this day every year,” said Singmaster. “It’s an important part of introducing the next generation of health care professionals to the differences BWH staff make in the lives of patients and their families.”
Throughout the day, children toured Radiology, Pathology, the Blood Bank, Blood Donor Center, Biomedical Engineering and Image Servicing/Radiology Imaging, and shadowed their parents or sponsors.
Linda Pieroni, BSN, RN, nurse in-charge in the Advanced Cardiac Therapy Unit, brought her 11-year-old twins, Andrea and Christopher Munro.
“This was a great opportunity for them to see where I work and the many faces around the hospital who make this a great place to work,” she said.
