The BWH Pathology Department celebrated National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week last week with an array of events to honor the department’s nearly 500 employees.
“Laboratory Professionals Get Results,” was this year’s theme, and that is certainly true of the BWH laboratory. About 7.4 million tests are performed each year in the Clinical Laboratory Division alone, and another 74,800 cases are processed and signed out in the Anatomical Pathology Division.
Medical technologists, medical lab technicians, histology technicians, pathologist’s assistants, pathology technicians, cytotechnologists, cytogenetic and molecular technicians and assorted lab assistants all are crucial to Pathology.
A breakfast that included Pathology word games and a Pathology version of Bingo kicked off the week. Pathology also hosted a department-wide book swap, its annual ice cream social and participated in Take Our Children to Work Day by offering tours of the Blood Bank, Microbiology Lab and other areas.
