In Kigali, Rwanda, 15 patients are preparing for life-changing heart surgery as Team Heart begins its second mission to the African country.
Team Heart, a volunteer group of surgeons, nurses, perfusionists, therapists and others from BWH and other hospitals, began this long-term mission one year ago and performed valve repair and replacement surgery on 11 patients. The team’s ultimate goal is to create a self-sustaining cardiac surgery program in the country to serve the thousands of Rwandans desperately in need of surgery.
“We are eager to begin this second mission, with the certainty that our Rwandan patients once again will touch our hearts even more than we touch theirs,” said R. Morton “Chip” Bolman, III, MD, who is one of the leaders of Team Heart.
