The theme for HR’s Career Development Event was “Learn, Grow and Bloom at BWH,” and the hundreds of employees who turned out at the Cabot Atrium last week found the resources to help them do just that.
“With this event, we showed employees the many career paths available here at the hospital and the various resources to help them achieve their goals,” said Beverley Sobers, director of Workforce Development. “Tuition reimbursement, loan forgiveness, educational opportunities and career coaching are among many programs we provide that several thousand employees already have taken advantage of.”
Representatives from departments including Nursing, Pharmacy, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Surgical Technology, Radiation Oncology and Labs spoke with employees about career ladder options and the education and training necessary to pursue those jobs. Employees also attended seminars on dressing for success, financial aid and resume-writing and interview tips during the event.
The event drew 217 employees, more than double last year’s attendance.
“The gathering in this room is in many ways the realization of a dream, but that dream is still in progress,” Wanda McClain, director of the Center for Community Health and Health Equity, said to employees during the event. “Workforce Development includes all of the elements here in this room—department managers and supervisors sharing information with employees who are interested in them.”
McClain shared her own story of taking advantage of tuition reimbursement early in her career to finish her undergraduate degree. “I wouldn’t have finished nearly as quickly without it,” she said. “This is the Brigham’s commitment to employees—for them not just to have jobs, but a career path.”
