Jeff Karp holds up a gecko-inspired bandage.
BWH researcher Jeff Karp, PhD, and his gecko adhesive technology are in good company on Popular Mechanics’ list of its “Top 20 Biotech Breakthroughs that Will Change Medicine.”
Karp’s surgical adhesives, inspired by the nano-size hairs on geckos’ feet that allow them to stick to surfaces, rank at #17 and join creations including an autonomous wheelchair, a rocket-powered arm, portable dialysis and decay-fighting microbes for teeth.
The bandages Karp and his team of BWH, MIT, MGH and Draper Laboratory researchers created join sutures and staples as a basic OR tool for patching up surgical wounds and internal injuries.
