Virginia Kelly was named chief librarian and program manager for the Michele and Howard Kessler Health Education Library in January.
“I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead this library, which truly is a gem,” said Kelly, who brings six years of medical library experience to the job, as well as more than 15 years experience in marketing communications and education.
Located in the Robert and Ronnie Bretholtz Center for Patients and Families, the library is home to approximately 1,300 books covering all aspects of medical care and wellness, in addition to consumer health magazines, informative pamphlets, databases and health education videos, tapes and CDs.
Kelly aims to expand the library’s educational events, including its successful speaker program, which brings dozens of authors from the BWH community face to face with patients and employees for discussion about health topics. She also plans to expand the library’s outreach to nurses and other front-line staff who can refer patients to the library to address their health information needs.
“Virginia’s experience will assure that the Kessler Library collection and programs are well maintained and marketed to our patients, families and staff for their use,” said Kathleen Gordon, director of Patient/Family Relations.
Prior to joining BWH, Kelly was a marketing communications manager and conducted research and developed educational materials for customers. Her medical library experience includes Cornell University Medical College/New York Hospital and Tufts University School of Medicine.
Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and her master’s degree in library services from Columbia University.
