In the Dominican Republic, 47 people with severe hip and knee joint disease are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Operation Walk Boston, a group of 50 clinicians led by BWH Chief of Orthopedic Surgery Thomas Thornhill, MD.
The team begins its second annual mission to the Dominican on March 25 to provide free joint replacement and rehabilitation to these pre-screened patients, who cannot afford the cost of surgery in their country. In Santo Domingo, the country’s capital, many individuals cannot provide for their families due to the disabling physical limitations of degenerative arthritis or trauma. Others cannot even walk around their homes because they lack basic equipment, like canes and walkers.
“Our team is excited to begin our second mission to help many people in the Dominican regain their quality of life,” said Roya Ghazinouri, PT, DPT, MS, BWH’s clinical supervisor for Inpatient Physical Therapy and mission coordinator for Operation Walk Boston. “We shipped out nearly five thousand pounds of medical supplies last month in preparation, and the team is eager to begin surgery.”
Operation Walk Boston will update its blog site during the mission March 25 – April 1. Follow along at http://www.operationwalkboston.blogspot.com/
