The BWH Joint Patrol joined with Team Barry for last month’s Boston Arthritis Walk. At 76 participants strong, the group was both the largest team and the top fund-raiser, bringing in more than $7,000 in support of care and education for patients with arthritis.
The teams walked together in memory of BWH rheumatologists Peter Barry, MD, and Jean Jackson, MD, who passed away earlier this year.
“It meant a great deal to our family to have our father and husband honored in this way, and it was a wonderful tribute to him and to Dr. Jackson,” said members of the Barry family. “He always held a special place in his heart for the BWH community, and we know he would have been overjoyed at seeing this outpouring of support for the fight against arthritis.”
The annual walk raises funds for the Arthritis Foundation, which supports patient care and education. BWH is the single largest recipient of funds from the foundation and, last year, received more than $1 million.
“We were all extraordinarily impressed with the turnout for the walk,” said Jonathan Coblyn, MD, director of the BWH Center for Arthritis and Joint Diseases. “The depth and breadth of the participants reflected the deep feelings of all of us for this effort and for the people who were honored.”
“Congratulations to everyone who participated in this event,” said team captain Kori Berardino, practice manager for the BWH Arthritis Center. “Whether you volunteered, walked one or three miles or walked with us in spirit and sponsored our team, you were crucial to this success.”
