October is Hispanic Heritage Month
Hilda Gallegos-Dargon, BSN, RN, and Spanish Interpreter Marta Solis this month were the first recipients of two new awards established by Patient Care Services and the Department of Nursing to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of staff from Hispanic and Latino backgrounds.
“We know the best staff includes nurses and health care professionals who reflect the communities we serve and are able to improve patient outcomes by advocating for culturally-sensitive care,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services.
Solis, a native of Costa Rica, was honored for her commitment in the past 35 years to teamwork and ensuring patients receive culturally sensitive care. In her spare time, she volunteers with organizations that advocate Latino services. She also serves as a role model for the future workforce by training and coaching the next generation of medical interpreters.
“Her commitment to BWH and the Latino community is a model for all of us,” said Ileana Jimenez-Garcia, MBA, director of Interpreter Services, during the ceremony in Carrie Hall. “She radiates comfort and warmth everyday.”
At Brookside Community Health Center, Gallegos-Dargon takes on a bit of detective work in helping Latino patients manage diabetes, among other responsibilities. She understands that Latino patients sometimes face challenges in managing their care because of busy lifestyles. Often, she checks with the Pharmacy to ensure her patients have refilled their medications and helps keep them on track to prevent other serious medical problems.
“Receiving this award is an honor,” said Gallegos-Dargon, a native of Costa Rica. “But most importantly, it’s an honor to represent a small sample of what many Latinos are doing to provide excellent care to patients.”
