First editions of William Withering’s 1799 book, “An account of the Foxglove and some of its Medical Uses,” and “Surgery of the Heart” by Peter Bent Brigham Hospital Chief Surgeon Elliot Carr Cutler now are available to medical students and history enthusiasts at BWH.
These rare works on cardiovascular medicine and surgery are among 300 antique books and 200 reprints, which date from the 1600s, now housed in the Lawrence H. Cohn, MD, Library in the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.
“I’m very proud to be part of the BWH community for so many years and excited to make this collection available to the students of cardiovascular specialties and as a resource for anyone interested in the history of diagnosis and therapy of cardiovascular disease,” said Cohn, the Virginia and James Hubbard Professor of Cardiac Surgery, who donated his collection to the hospital.
More than 100 BWH faculty, generous donors and grateful patients gathered earlier this month to dedicate this new library on Shapiro 3.
“A heart-felt thank you to Larry and Roberta Cohn for this generous donation,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, said. “The contents here will inspire everyone who crosses the threshold, reminding us all how the medical profession has for so many years served to help and heal.”
