More than 50 family members returned to BWH earlier this month to remember loved ones who passed away in the Neuroscience ICU this year.
“Our nurses organized this first memorial service so that they could touch base with and support families,” said Shaun Golden, BSN, RN, CNRN, Neuro ICU nurse manager. “It was very moving for both staff and families.”
The music of harpist Nancy Kleiman filled the Cabot Atrium as families were welcomed by nurses, physicians, social workers and chaplains. After listening to two readings, families watched a slideshow created by Grace Mascarinas-Huebsch, RN, of photos they had sent in of their loved ones.
As their loved ones’ names were called, guests brought a white rose to a vase in the front of the room and said a few words.
During a reception, families expressed gratitude for the opportunity to come back to BWH. “This effort helps them to cope with their loss,” Golden said.
One woman even came with a checklist of nurses who had cared for her husband. She needed to be in touch with each of them to thank them so that she could move on.
The Neuro ICU will hold this service annually to show support to patients’ families.
